Career Planning:
Exercises in this workshop assist youth in identifying (based on interests) and planning for a career and what steps you can take TODAY along that path. Communication: It’s not always what you SAY that tells your story The importance of understanding what your body language, tone of voice, dress and mannerisms say about you. This workshop also discusses the idea of creating your “Work-self” and how your behavior at work affects your job. Hygiene is also discussed. Career Day: A quarterly activity where people in each youth’s desired career area are invited to come and speak to the group about their jobs and answer any questions. A great chance to meet people who are open to offering job shadowing opportunities. Effective Job Searching: Youth learn and practice utilizing their time wisely in seeking out, applying for, and following up on job searches and applications. They learn to schedule using a job-search log that will help them organize and plan their search. Money Management: A youth favorite! We have created a board game that teaches everything from writing checks and balancing your checkbook to paying bills and understanding credit. Youth will also explore the costs involved in living on their own and what types of jobs they will need to support their desired lifestyles. |
Job Search Packet:
A group workshop that includes individual help in completing a PERFECT application, resume and cover letter building, identifying and contacting references. Interviewing skills: Role-played interviews will be video-taped and replayed after learning and practicing answering interview questions and the question WITHIN the question. This workshop is done in a group to help youth become comfortable with public speaking. They will also practice ASKING questions. Planned Networking: Since 75% of all job openings are filled by word-of-mouth, it is all about who you know, or who THEY know. This workshop teaches how to build a network and actually schedule your networking. Youth will leave with a network list and tasks as well as a 30-second power statement about themselves. Entrepreneurship Workshop: This workshop helps youth explore business ideas they have and the feasibility of turning them into a profitable opportunity. Prior groups have had ideas ranging from t-shirt design and sales to face painting. Youth will understand the steps in starting and running a business of their own. Financial Forms: Youth learn to complete important employment related forms such as I-9, W4 and how to prepare a 1040 tax return. The importance of keeping financial records on file is also taught such as pay stubs, tax returns etc. |
